Testimonials...

I feel immediately safe with Karen. I'm at ease in her company.   - Peter Lloyd, Inside Story. From ABC Foreign Correspondent to Singapore prisoner 12988.

I feel sure that our meeting you and working with you is the best chance we have of each individually achieving our best possible emotional health. And that has to be a good thing.  - Wife of a couple who were attending for marriage counseling, after 4th session.

Hi Karen - Since our return home I must admit that my feelings and emotions have been somewhat erratic so started watching your DVDs firstly to understand my partner more and  ... so started to watch the ones which can help me survive this. I truly don't want to feel like this ... My apologies for going on but I need someone with your years of experience & understanding.

Karen took me on a road trip of self-discovery in defining my own personality and that of the person closest to me and how the dynamics of our relationship was affected by it all; it all started to make sense.

In CBT counseling, through discussion you gain clarity about the negative emotions you feel (possibly affecting your behavior) and an understanding of why you feel what you feel. You can often then alter distorted thinking and/or make decisions about what you can do to affect the way you feel. Talking things through usually makes it clearer about what you want to do with your issue.

Over several sessions you will learn cognitive strategies to manage negative emotions and how to respond to others in mature and appropriate ways. You will experience the impact this changed behavior has on your self-esteem and on your relationships, both at home and at work. If the counselor assesses that a further referral is indicated, for example, to a doctor for medication or psychiatrist for diagnosis, this will also be discussed.

How can counseling help me? How will I benefit?

Often people comment that they feel better after just one session. This is entirely possible as:

  • You have had an opportunity to ventilate feelings and perspectives and not be judged.
  • The Counselor gives explanation to and normalises the feelings you are having.
  • You leave believing that you have just taken the first step to feeling better long-term.

  • Individual Counseling
Individual counseling provides an opportunity to be heard and understood without judgement. A person can gain insights into his or her individual situation through interactions with the counselor.
  • Couples Counseling
Couples in new relationships, married couples, same sex couples, couples contemplating marriage, cross-cultural couples can use this counseling to explore issues, communication difficulties, or conflict arising from relationship decisions that have to be made.
  • Marriage Counseling
Couples will use marriage counseling to explore unresolved hurts, ineffective communication, and how each partner gives and receives love according to their own and their partner's needs.
  • Family Counseling
Family members use counseling sessions to explore unresolved hurts and ineffective communication. The counselor encourages each member to share his or her perspective on identified issues and ensures that each perspective is heard and validated. Often family members are not giving each other any positives or showing love in a way that is meaningful to each person.
  • Trauma Counseling
It is very common, in fact quite normal, for people to experience emotional aftershocks when they have passed through a horrible event. Sometimes the emotional aftershock (or stress reactions) appear immediately after the traumatic event. Sometimes they may appear a few hours or a few days later. And, in some cases, weeks or months may pass before the stress reactions appear.
  • Employee Counseling
Karen Gosling's EAP (Employee Assistance Program) counseling service for CEOs, senior level executives, and staff is confidential. Whilst the employer will be provided with an outline of the overall issues concerning the employee, issues that are confidential between the and client will remain so.
  • Adult ADD Counseling
Adult ADD counseling is initially about education ... teaching you about the traits and characteristics of ADD ... and understanding why you feel what you feel. It helps you understand how your behavior impacts on other people around you.
  • Grief Counseling
After the death of a loved one it is normal to feel numb for some weeks.  The pain of grief starts 4-5 weeks after the death and is experienced as an intense physical pain.  This can be quite frightening and all consuming. Grief counseling helps to normalize and process the grief reaction.
