Serotonin is crucial to well-being. An imbalance can lower your mood state and disrupt your mental, emotional, and physical health

Lets learn about serotonin,  a chemical produced in the brain for several important functions. It is the mood chemical, and elevated serotonin elevates a person’s sense of well-being; hence the importance of laughter.

Depleted serotonin results in a lowered mood state, also impaired thinking and impaired sleeping. Serotonin is one of the chemicals that prepare the body for sleep according to the person’s sleep cycle.

Significant fluctuations result in altered sleep patterns. Any stressed person knows this!

Serotonin is one of the brain’s neuro-transmitters, needed to enable electrical impulses to jump across neurons in the brain, which is thought. When you are feeling down, the lowered serotonin in your brain results in the jumping coming to a halt, resulting in the brain feeling blocked or stuck or foggy.

Explained simply, the electrical impulses then simply cycle in the area of the brain where they have just been, resulting in recurring thought, or dwelling. The ruminations are always about something negative, which results in the further production of adrenalin, and so the cycle of anxiety or obsessive thinking is set up, with debilitating consequences.

Self-esteem and stress (negative emotion) operate as counterweights. As stress rises self-esteem decreases, and vice versa. This is the biological cause of lowered self esteem—as serotonin lowers, thinking becomes even more inaccurate and irrational and you are unable to inject positiveness about yourself or your situation into your brain.

From inside the brain, your perspective has become your reality. Without proper intervention you may ultimately become depressed. It is very difficult to “cheer up” a person who is feeling depressed, as his reality literally is an altered view of the world. Your ‘inner voice’ has gained control over your appraisal.
